- 1689年 初代長兵衛が近江の国の“饗庭（あいば）”より、都に出て店を開く。
- 七代目よりうちわ専門店となり、御所うちわの伝統を伝える「京うちわ」を作り続ける。
- 現当主は、その十代目。『阿以波』のみとなった京うちわの製作技術を今に伝えるとともに、新たな「うちわ文化」を創造し続けています。

- 繊細な手仕事、300年続く老舗がつくる日本唯一の京うちわ
「京うちわ」は、うちわ面と柄を別に作り、後から柄を差し込む「差し柄」の構造が特徴です。
宮廷で用いられた「御所うちわ」をルーツとしており、優美な趣も魅力です。
うちわの骨となる竹の加工から紙の張り合わせ、仕上げまで、すべての工程を国内で手作業で行います。
竹は丹波の4～5年もの、紙は越中・八尾（やつお）の手漉き楮（こうぞ）紙を、柄の部分は栂（つが）を用いるなど、国産の素材で作られた高品質なうちわです。
夏の風物詩である京うちわは、300年あまり脈々と受け継がれてきた技術と日本画を思わせるような図案で、見て涼を愉しむという日本人の心が現代まで息づいています。
こちらのうちわは飾って愉しむだけではなく、あおぐことも可能です。
“Uchiwa” is a Japanese unfolded round fan. There are some local uchiwa and Kyo-uchiwa is made in Kyoto originating from Gosho uchiwa used in the Imperial Court. The main feature of Kyo-uchiwa is that the face (ribs wrapped with thin paper) and the handle are separately made and then joint them together by inserting the handle into the bottom of the face. In the case of Marugame-uchiwa, 90% of all uchiwa made in Japan, one piece of bamboo is fashioned into both ribs and a handle.
All the process, from processing bamboo for ribs to wrapping paper around ribs, is finished by hand in Japan.
All the materials are domestic and high-quality; 4- or 5-years bamboo from Tanba, hand-made paper from Yatsuo in the Echu ara, and domestic tsuga tree for handles.
It has been customary to use uchiwa during Japanese summers. Kyo-uchiwa, among several local uchiwa, may be special one from the both technical and aesthetical angles.
Although Kyo-uchiwa is rather decorative, this one can be used as a formal fan.

床の間などに飾っていただくと、それだけでも十分に品がありますが、影が出ることにより平面だったうちわが立体的に見え、美術品としても愉しめます。
Beautiful shadows made by light through the face is another feature of Kyo-uchiwa.
It is fine to just display Kyo-uchiwa at the corner of your room, but it will turn out be an artwork if you shine a light on it. At the same time, it changes from two-dimentional to three-dimensional object.
